The following provides an outline of some of the cases being looked into by the Inquiry into LGBTIQ hate crimes.

This is not an exhaustive list and will continue to be updated as the Inquiry’s work continues.

Mark Stewart

May 1976

North Head, Manly

Mark Stewart, originally called Mark Spanswick, was only 18 years old when he died in 1976.

Ernest Head

June 1976

Summer Hill

Ernest Head was 44 years old when he died in his apartment in Summer Hill in 1976.

Barry Jones

26 September 1976

Five Dock

Barry Jones was 41 years old when he died at the grandstand in Five Dock Park, Five Dock.

Paul Rath

16 June 1977

North Head, Manly

Paul Rath was 27 years old when he died at North Head in Manly in 1977.

David Lloyd-Williams

24 August 1978

North Head, Manly

David Lloyd-Williams was suffering from severe depression when he died at North Head in Manly in 1978.

Walter John Bedser

December 1980

Paramatta

Walter Bedser, known more commonly by his middle name John, or “Johnny”, was an antique dealer in Parramatta.

Richard Slater

22 December 1980

Newcastle

Richard Slater was 69 years old when he died on 22 December 1980 at Newcastle Hospital.

Gerald Cuthbert

17 or 18 October 1981

Paddington

Gerald Cuthbert was just 27 years old when he was murdered in his apartment on 17 or 18 October 1981.

Peter Sheil

April 1983

Gordons Bay

Peter Sheil was 29 years old when he died at Gordons Bay near Clovelly in April 1983.

Peter Baumann was a 25-year-old German national who disappeared from his home in Waverley on or around 26 October 1983.

Wendy Waine

30 April 1985

Kings Cross

Wendy Wain was a transgender woman and a well-known entertainer in Kings Cross who was murdered in her own apartment in 1985.

Gilles Mattaini

Marks Park, Bondi

Gilles Mattaini was a young gay man from France who lived in Bondi with his partner and worked as a barman in the city.

William “Bill” Antony Rooney

February 1986

Wollongong

William Antony Rooney, known as "Bill", was originally from Scotland but died in Wollongong in February 1986 at the age of 35.

Andrew Currie

December 1988

North Manly

Andrew Currie was 29 years old when he died in a public toilet block in North Manly, after visiting a friend.

William Allen

Alexandria

48-year-old William Allen was a retired schoolteacher who lived in Alexandria and was murdered in 1988.

Samantha Raye

20 March 1989

South Head

Samantha Raye’s body was found in a cave below Hornby Lighthouse, South Head, in the morning of 20 March 1989.

Russell Payne was 33 years old when he died at his home in Inverell, NSW.

Kings Cross – Potts Point

John Hughes, affectionally known to his friends as “Skinny John”, lived in Potts Point until his death in May 1989.

Ross Warren was a 25-year-old television news reader with Channel WIN4 in Wollongong who went missing on a visit to Sydney in July 1989.

John Russell was a barman at the Bronte Bowling Club, and he lived with his brother Peter at Bondi.

William Dutfield was 41 years old and died in his apartment in Mosman in November 1991.

Robert Malcolm, known to his workmates as "Bob", worked at the GPO in Martin Place and lived with his parents in suburban Sydney.

Brian Walker was a happy-go-lucky man, described by his family as a talented artist and a “bit of wanderer” who died, aged 30, in 1992.

Musician Crispin Dye was 41 when he died on Christmas Day in 1993.

James Meek

Kenneth Brennan was a history teacher with the Open High School in Sydney who shared an apartment in Elizabeth Bay with his partner of five years.

Train driver Carl Stockton lived alone in Surry Hills and died after Melbourne Cup Day in 1996.

Scott Miller

Millers Point

Scott Miller grew up in Orange and was a keen footballer with many friends who died aged just 21, in 1997, not long after moving to Sydney.
